Mazda Certified Pre-Owned: What You Get and How It Works

If you’re shopping for a used Mazda, you’ll see “Mazda Certified Pre-Owned,” or CPO, on a lot of listings. It’s a factory program run by Mazda that adds a detailed inspection, extra warranty coverage and roadside help to the vehicle itself. Here’s what the program includes, in plain English.

What Makes a Mazda “Certified”

Mazda says only well-maintained, late-model vehicles make the CPO cut. To be eligible, a vehicle must pass a 160-point inspection, performed inside and out by a factory-trained Mazda technician. A few of the checks Mazda lists:

  • The A/C system operates properly
  • Seats and headrests work in all positions
  • ABS works properly on hard stops
  • Shift quality and shift points
  • The windshield is free of cracks, large chips and improper repairs
  • Smooth acceleration

Every Mazda CPO vehicle also comes with a CARFAX Vehicle History Report.

Warranty Coverage

12-month/12,000-mile CPO Vehicle Limited Warranty. Every CPO Mazda keeps any remaining portion of its original 3-year/36,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty. The CPO coverage then adds another 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. If the original warranty has already ended, CPO coverage starts on the day you buy.

7-year/100,000-mile CPO Limited Powertrain Warranty. This is measured from when the vehicle was first sold new, whichever comes first. Mazda sums up the coverage as “flywheel to freeze plug, thermostat to turbocharger”.

Zero deductible. Covered repairs cost you nothing out of pocket at Mazda dealers across the U.S..

Transferable. If you sell the car later, both CPO warranties transfer to the next owner at no cost.

Roadside Assistance and Extras

CPO buyers and qualified family members get Mazda’s 24-hour Emergency Roadside Assistance, 24/7, for the length of the 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, in the U.S. and Canada. Services include:

  • Jump starts
  • Lockout assistance
  • Flat tire changes
  • Towing to the nearest authorized Mazda dealership
  • Gas delivery

CPO vehicles also include a one-year CARFAX Buyback Guarantee, subject to CARFAX’s terms. Select satellite radio-equipped vehicles come with a 3-month SiriusXM All Access trial.

Tips for Shopping Certified

  • Ask for the paperwork. Request the completed inspection checklist and the CARFAX report for any CPO vehicle you’re considering.
  • Know the in-service date. The powertrain warranty counts from the original sale date, so ask when the car was first sold.
  • Think about fit first. Mazda CPO inventory can include many models, from the Mazda3 to the CX-90, so start with the size and features you need.
