2026 Mazda3: Sedan or Hatchback, Which One Fits You?

The Mazda3 is Mazda’s compact car, and for 2026 it comes two ways: the Mazda3 Sedan and the Mazda3 Hatchback. They share engines, cabin design and safety tech, so the choice mostly comes down to shape and how you use your car. Here’s what to know before you visit.

Two Body Styles, One Design Approach

Both versions wear Mazda’s KODO: “Soul of Motion” design, which Mazda says creates a sense of movement with striking curves and angles. Inside, Mazda’s Ideal Drive Position philosophy places the seat, steering wheel and tech to help minimize driver distraction.

Mazda3 Sedan. A separate trunk and a sleek, traditional sedan profile. Depending on trim, Mazda lists White or Red leather or warm Greige leatherette. Every Sedan uses a Skyactiv-Drive 6-speed automatic with manual-shift and Sport modes.

Mazda3 Hatchback. A rear hatch for bulkier gear and a sporty stance. It’s also the Mazda3 for drivers who like to shift for themselves: the 2.5 S Premium Hatchback comes with a Skyactiv-MT 6-speed manual transmission. Other Hatchback trims use the 6-speed automatic.

Engines and All-Wheel Drive

Every Mazda3 uses a Skyactiv-G 2.5 engine. On 2.5 S models it makes up to 186 hp. The available 2.5 Turbo adds a Dynamic Pressure turbocharger for up to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque on recommended premium fuel.

G-Vectoring Control Plus makes subtle torque and braking adjustments for a smoother, more stable drive.

If you want extra grip for Maryland winters, look at the trims with i-Activ AWD. It’s standard on the 2.5 S Carbon Edition and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus in both body styles. Other trims are front-wheel drive.
